Food... where do I start.
Kartoffel: potatoes. Potatoes with every meal (pommes= French fries). Generally served with bacon. At the Kartoffel house, I ordered Indian Kartoffel, and it was served with every kind of fruit you can imagine (including star fruit!) in a creamy curry sauce. It was strange, but overall I think I enjoyed the dish.
Eis: basically ice cream. EVERYWHERE. So many icecream restaurants you wouldn't believe! And the service at these places! Amazing! (Tabs, you would be in heaven!) Today was Jason's boss' birthday, so we walked down to one of the local joints and the menu was fantastic. Everything icecream you can imagine. And the presentation! In the States you are lucky to get a mix in with your scoop, but here a banana split looks boring in comparision. Who knew?
Champignons: mushrooms! I've gone to heaven! Mushrooms everywhere. I found a big box of chanterelles at Aldi for 2.50 euro! And the other day, at a local sidewalk cafe (where the tables are actually in the street rather than on the sidewalk) I ordered Pfannechampignons which turned out to be a skillet filled with mushrooms and onions in a hint of cream sauce topped with melted cheese. Can you say yum?
Schnitzel: fried pork. (I'm guessing, cuz that's what it tasted like) The breading was surprisingly light and fluffy, more like panko that flour or regular breadcrumbs. I'm a fan.
I'm amazed by how much food people can eat. I've always been told that Americans have huge portion sizes and that's why we are all so fat, but the portion sizes are the same here, and it's rare that I see someone actually leave food on their plate. It's just that we don't walk everywhere and therefore don't burn all the calories.
I cooked for the first time last night. We had sauted chicken with green beans and rice. I forgot that we only have two burners, so the greenbeans were cold before I even started cooking the rice. Ah well, I'll have to relearn how to cook. Did I mention we don't have an oven... or a microwave... just two burners and three very small pots.

Holy cow, the ice cream sounds awesome! I'm glad you are able to find mushrooms everywhere. It sounds like there are a lot of potatoes...I didn't realize they ate so many of them. Maybe you will find lots more ways you like them there. The idea of a curry with potatos, bacon and fruit is weird to me. I'm glad you liked it though.
Melanie, it sounds like you are having fun exploring--and eating well! Let's hear more about your apartment and that two burner kitchen! And I want to see pictures of the ice cream!!
LOVE your blog and hearing of your adventures! Hope you're enjoying Germany---keep us updated! :-)
The ice cream sounds wonderful.
Whenever I had schnitzel it was veal, and we had it when I was a kid quite a bit.
To F: I hope it wasn't veal! But it sure did taste like pork...
I wondered about the pork vs. veal. I looked it up and schnitzel is cutlet. It can be pork or veal, it depends on what other word they had listed. If it said weiner schnitzel, it was most likely veal. Otherwise, if it tasted like pork, maybe it was.
Well, I am glad to see that you have your priorities straight. First things first, the food. And it sounds like you have your mouth full. Good job!
