Rome, The Colosseum
All of the guidebooks will tell you that getting into The Colosseum is difficult. Well, go at 8:30am on December 30 and you'll have no problems getting in at all! We had planned on going to the Forum first because it's generally easier to get in there, but when we got off the subway, there was no line at the Colosseum. So we jumped at the chance to get there before the crowds descended. And it was good. To view larger versions of the pictures, just click on them :)

What's the maze looking structure in the center of the coliseum?
That's the hypogeum (literally, underground). There was a wood floor covering it, and the wood was covered with sand. The hypogeum consisted of a two level network of underground tunnels and cages, which is where the gladiators and caged animals were held before events. There were trap doors in the floor of the arena and the Romans used elevators and pulleys to raise and lower props and caged animals. The floor of the area could also be flooded.
